慈善活動センターがリストを整理してみると、
某弁護士からの寄付が一度もないということが判明した。
そこで、寄付集めの担当者が弁護士に電話して寄付の説得を試みた。

「当センターの記録では、年収50万ドル以上の方のなかで、
　一銭の寄付もしていないのは貴方だけということになっています。
　社会還元について前向きにお考えですか？」
少々考えた後、弁護士が口を開く。
「まず第一に、私の母親が長いこと寝たきりで死にかけていること、
　その上、その医療費が彼女の年収の数倍もするということをご存知の上での質問ですか？」
職員は困惑し、口篭もった。
「えー…いいえ」
「…それだけじゃないんだよ。
　私の弟はね、戦争に行って障害者になっている。
　目が見えないし、車椅子のお世話になっているんだ」
職員が弁解の言葉を口にする暇も与えず、弁護士は言葉を重ねる。
「…まだある。私の妹は交通事故で亭主をなくしてね。
　子供を三人抱えて一文無しの状態さ」
弁護士の口調は、明らかに憤慨した時のそれだった。
電話の前で頭を垂れながら職員が言う。
「それはその…お気の毒様です…」

弁護士は最後に一言。
「そんな身内にも一銭も恵んでいないこの私が、
　君のところに寄付するとでも思っているのかね？」
